Philippine Military Eyes Acquiring Two Submarines
As part of its modernization efforts, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) intends to acquire at least two diesel-electric submarines.
This was shared by AFP Chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. in his talk during an event held to support collaboration between the military and civilian sectors on national issues.
Brawner emphasized the importance of submarines in effectively defending an archipelago like the Philippines, with a budget of around 80 to 110 billion Philippine pesos ($1.38 to $1.9 billion).
However, the army chief highlighted that the modernization program lacks funding, so the service is exploring local and foreign financing.
“Hopefully, we can achieve that, within the specified time. Remember what we need is really funds in order for us to achieve the objectives set for the Horizon 3 of the (AFP) Modernization Program,” he said.
Horizon 3 is the third phase of Manila’s military modernization initiative to bolster defense capabilities amid increasing tensions with China in the South China Sea.
Planned Acquisitions
Apart from submarines, the Southeast Asian country previously expressed interest in purchasing medium-range missiles and modern fighter jets to defend its sovereignty.
In December last year, the Philippines announced its planned acquisition of the Typhon missile system, which the AFP used during a joint military drill with US forces. However, the system was not yet budgeted for 2025.
Additionally, a contract to buy 12 more FA-50 Fighting Eagle supersonic combat aircraft from South Korea is expected to be finalized by mid-2025.
