The Israeli Navy has conducted a successful operational test launch of its Gabriel 5 sea-to-sea missile, described by Israeli officials as the “world’s most advanced” naval strike system.
The test, executed by the navy’s Missile Ship Flotilla in partnership with the Directorate of Defense Research and Development, showcased the weapon’s ability to detect and precisely target a representative enemy ship.
According to a defense ministry statement, the missile was launched as planned, followed its expected trajectory, and struck the target exactly as intended.
“This capability is a significant component of the Israeli Navy’s offensive array, ensuring Israel’s maritime superiority,” the statement read. “The success of this test strengthens the Israeli Navy’s combat capabilities and enhances its readiness to face operational challenges.”
The test, simulating real-world scenarios, aimed to refine the missile’s firing capabilities further.
The Gabriel 5 missile was first tested in September 2022 aboard a Sa’ar 6 corvette.
‘Advancing Israel’s Offensive Capabilities’
Developed by Israel Aerospace Industries, the Gabriel 5 missile can strike targets more than 200 kilometers (124 miles) away, regardless of sea or air conditions.
Equipped with a powerful penetrating warhead, the missile can neutralize a wide range of maritime threats, such as enemy warships.
It features an active radar seeker with advanced anti-jamming capabilities, a wide search range, and superior discrimination resolution.
Additionally, the missile flies at subsonic speeds, enhancing precision while producing a lower thermal signature that reduces the risk of detection.
An Israeli Navy official noted that the successful test represents a significant leap in the country’s offensive capabilities, enabling a more effective response to emerging threats.
“The Israeli Navy will continue to develop and enhance its offensive and defensive capabilities to maintain maritime superiority and ensure the security of Israel’s citizens,” he added.
