Canada Opens Renovated Jetty for Future Naval Fleets in British Columbia

Canada’s Department of Defence has inaugurated a reconstructed jetty at the Esquimalt military base in Victoria, British Columbia.

Costing 1.1 billion Canadian dollars ($767.9 million), the infrastructure is part of a broader project to modernize the harbor and its stationed assets.

Following its launch, the jetty will be able to receive the Royal Canadian Navy’s incoming ships under the government’s National Shipbuilding Strategy, including the Joint Support Ships and the Arctic Offshore Patrol Vessels.

The dock was built using “modern technologies” and sustainable materials, further improving the installation’s response capabilities in the face of climate change and natural events such as earthquakes and tsunamis.

“CFB Esquimalt is the second largest military base in Canada and the Defence Team members stationed there require the appropriate infrastructure to support their vital work in defending our country,” Canadian Emergency Preparedness Minister Harjit Sajjan stated.

“The investment in the Royal Canadian Navy by our government, the largest since the Second World War, includes modern infrastructure that can support our newly acquired fleets.”

Second Dock in 2031

The Canadian Department of Defence stated that the four-year construction of the dock supported nearly 1,300 jobs, all of which will be retained for the development of a second jetty at the site, which is scheduled to be completed by 2031.

“This milestone will ensure the Royal Canadian Navy has the critical infrastructure it needs at Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt to accommodate the next generation of Canadian naval vessels,” Canadian Defence Minister Bill Blair stated.

“This is an important milestone in the A/B Jetty Recapitalization Project, and I am proud of the progress being made in continuing to grow our military capabilities.”
