Taiwanese Army Begins Training on US-Supplied Abrams Tanks

The Taiwanese Army has officially begun training on the first batch of M1A2T Abrams main battle tanks, which arrived from the US in December 2024.

Taiwanese military instructors, who trained in the US and returned home in November, have started classroom sessions to familiarize fellow soldiers with the operation of the advanced armored vehicles.

Soldiers who have previously operated older US-made tanks are undergoing retraining, focusing on the unique performance features, maintenance requirements, and safety protocols of the Abrams.

According to a military source, provided there are no further delays in the training, combat preparations for the third-generation tanks could begin in the latter half of this year.

Further assessments are expected before the tanks are fully fielded.

New Tank Proving Ground

To enhance training for Taiwanese Abrams tank operators, a new proving ground is under construction in Hsinchu County’s Kengzihkou.

The facility will feature a multi-purpose shooting range where Abrams operators can practice firing at night and while moving.

It will also include new target platforms that move automatically, allowing for dynamic and interactive training.

Additionally, the proving ground will have an extended range of 1.8 kilometers (1.1 miles), facilitating long-range testing of the Abrams’ weapon systems.

Army sources have not provided a specific timeline for when the proving ground will be ready to accommodate the new tanks.
