Australia to Buy Additional Anti-Radar Missiles From US
Australia is purchasing more Advanced Anti-Radiation Guided Missile-Extended Range (AARGM-ER) missiles from the US.
Under the foreign military sale, Canberra is investing 650 million Australian dollars ($404.1 million) to increase its airborne firepower stockpile.
The weapons add to a previous AARGM-ER package valued at 431 million Australian dollars ($268 million) in August 2023.
“This is the Albanese Government delivering the capabilities needed for the Australian Defence Force,” Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles stated.
“Australia and the United States continue to work as closely as ever, and the Alliance between our two countries ensures Australians are kept safe and our national interests are defended.”
‘Key Priority’
Developed by Northrop Grumman, the AARGM-ER is an air-launched missile that can detect and neutralize adversarial surface-to-air radar systems.
It deploys at supersonic speed, reaching Mach 4 (4,939 kilometers/3,069 miles per hour).
The missile will be fitted into the Royal Australian Air Force’s F/A-18F Super Hornet, EA-18G Growler, and F-35A Lightning II fighter jets.
“These world class missiles will improve the range, survivability and effectiveness of our Air Force to find and destroy enemy radars,” Australian Defence Industry and Capability Delivery Minister Pat Conroy commented.
“The Albanese Government is delivering its commitment to enhance Australia’s long-range strike capability, delivering on a key priority of the National Defence Strategy.”
