Kongsberg Lands New Joint Strike Missile Contract With US Air Force
Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace has secured a follow-on contract from the US Air Force to provide additional Joint Strike Missiles (JSMs) for its fighter jets.
Announced on Friday, the deal includes the delivery of JSM all-up-rounds with containers, test hardware, and additional support items.
Work will be conducted in Norway, with an expected completion date of September 2027.
“We are pleased to welcome the US Air Force to the JSM user group and look forward to continuing to support US defense capabilities with strike missiles from Kongsberg,” company president Eirik Lie stated.
In June 2024, the US Air Force placed a similar order to equip its F-35A Lightning II multi-role aircraft with internal strike capability.
Valued at $69.5 million, this latest deal brings the total contract value to $208 million.
About the JSM
The JSM is a long-range, precision-guided missile originally developed for the Royal Norwegian Air Force.
Based on the powerful Naval Strike Missile, it equips fixed-wing aircraft with the capability to engage both land and naval targets effectively.
The missile features a highly accurate navigation system and an automatic target recognition system enhanced by an advanced imaging infrared seeker.
The JSM has an effective strike range of 275 kilometers (170 miles) and can travel at high subsonic speeds.
The weapon is designed to support anti-surface warfare, naval fire support, and long-range strike missions.
