ND Defense to Assemble Medium Tactical Truck Prototype for US Marines

The US Department of Defense has awarded ND Defense a $17.2-million contract to produce a Medium Tactical Truck (MTT) prototype for the Marine Corps.

The project is part of the service’s ongoing program to transition from its existing Oshkosh Medium Tactical Vehicle (MTVR) fleet to a new family of advanced truck systems.

MTT vehicles to be developed from this effort will be based on ND Defense’s flagship Atlas all-terrain logistics and tactical support vehicle product line.

The Pentagon’s deal with ND will be facilitated under the MTT initiative’s second phase, bringing the total investment with the firm to $24.2 million. The first phase covered the critical design review and executive summary in September 2024.

Among the anticipated configurations that the MTT will be built in include cargo, dump, wrecker, tractor, and re-supply variants its MTVR predecessor had.

Medium Tactical Truck – Cargo Variant

The US Marine Corps’ February 2024 program announcement specified that the MTT prototyping phase would focus on building a cargo variant with a 10, 15, and 20-foot (3, 4.6, and 6-meter) cargo bed compatibility before moving on to other variants.

Each must have a hybrid-electric technology, extended range, and silent drive capability. It should also carry 10-kilowatt onboard and 30-kilowatt scalable/exportable power generators to address the power demands of mission payloads and external equipment.

The future vehicle must have 70 percent off-road and 30 percent on-road mobility with 60-inch (152-centimeter) water-fording maneuverability.

Additional requirements encompass a dedicated maintenance solution as well as modular and scalable designs for the MTT’s armor and control systems.

Alongside ND Defense, the Marine Corps partnered with Pennsylvania-based Mack Defense for the program’s first phase, with an offering derived from its proprietary Granite truck model.
