Australia Starts First of Annual Military Deployment to Indo-Pacific

The Australian Defence Force has launched its first Regional Presence Deployment (RPD) to the Indo-Pacific this year.

The RPD program is Canberra’s long-term commitment of maritime and air military visits to support allies in strengthening security throughout the region.

The initial deployment for this year’s iteration will include the HMAS Hobart (DDG 39) air warfare destroyer, which will be stationed for six weeks across Southeast Asia.

Approximately 230 personnel will be assigned to the vessel, with operations to be supported by an MH-60R Seahawk anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare helicopter aboard the ship.

“Regional Presence Deployments demonstrate Australia’s ongoing commitment to supporting regional security and stability, and promoting a peaceful and prosperous Indo-Pacific region,” Australian Defence Force Joint Operations Chief Vice Admr. Justin Jones stated.

“These deployments also provide the opportunity to engage with our partner nations at sea and in the air to enhance interoperability.”

Among the first activities under the RPD will be Exercise La Perouse 25, a biennial military drill led by France that will be held this year in southern Indonesia.

HMAS Hobart Commander Alisha Withers assured that the warship’s crew is “ready and mission capable” for future deployments under the RPD framework.

“All of the crew are looking forward to representing Australia in the Indo-Pacific region and I thank their families for their ongoing support,” she said.
