USAF Receives First F-15E With New Electronic Warfare Suite

The first pair of F-15E Strike Eagle aircraft equipped with the Eagle Passive/Active Warning and Survivability System (EPAWSS) has returned to the 48th Fighter Wing of the US Air Force at RAF Lakenheath, UK.

The 48th is the only F-15 wing based in Europe hosting two F-15E Strike Eagle fighter squadrons. Both squadrons, the 494th and 492th, have each received an aircraft.

“Having EPAWSS operational at RAF Lakenheath significantly enhances our ability to detect and counter threats, ensuring the safety and effectiveness of our crews,” 494th fighter squadron commander Lt. Col. Timothy Causey said.

“This advanced electronic warfare system, when combined with the F-35s, acts as a powerful force multiplier, transforming our operations and amplifying the 48th Fighter Wing’s impact in the battlespace.”

The BAE Systems suite is designed for both the F-15E and F-15EX fleets.

A $616-million full-rate production contract was recently awarded to Boeing for the suite, with an expected completion date of 2030.

The advanced all-digital electronic warfare system enhances the aircraft’s survivability in highly contested environments, enabling deeper penetration of the aircraft in enemy airspace.

The BAE Systems suite provides the F-15E and F-15EX fleet with radar warning, geolocation, situational awareness, and self-protection solutions against surface and airborne threats.

Leveraging digital electronic warfare technology developed for fifth-generation fighter jets, it enhances the pilot’s situational awareness through autonomous threat detection, identification, and location.

The system is smaller and lighter than previous electronic warfare systems and features a modular design that ensures new capabilities and future upgrades.

Additionally, it comes with a fully integrated AN/ALE-47 chaff and flare countermeasure dispenser system.
