The Swedish government partially funded Romania’s replacement for its Patriot air defense system donated to Ukraine.

A total of 300 million Swedish kronor ($27 million) has been transferred to Bucharest as part of the effort, the Swedish Ministry of Defence announced in a press release.

The amount has been delivered under the German-led Immediate Action on Air Defense project and comes from previously announced support packages for Ukraine.

“Romania is in need of financial means to be able to reacquire Patriot-type projectiles, sensors and other equipment as a replacement for the systems that the country donated to Ukraine in 2024,” the ministry stated.

Norway has already announced 1.4 billion Norwegian kronor ($124 million) for the replacement.

Romanian Patriot for Ukraine

Romania announced it would donate a Patriot system to Ukraine in June last year after initial hesitation.

The system was delivered in October, taking the total in Ukraine to five, including three from Germany and one from the US.

Countries like the Netherlands and Spain have provided individual launchers to Ukraine.

Bucharest signed a $3.9-billion deal to buy seven Patriot systems from the US in 2017, receiving four of them and awaiting the scheduled arrival of three more by 2027.

Meanwhile, another deal was signed by Romania with RTX last week for the purchase of an additional Patriot system.

The $946-million deal includes fire units consisting of radars, control stations, and missiles.
