Volvo Supplies 4×4, 6×6 Military Trucks to Estonia

The Estonian Defense Forces have taken delivery of 4×4 and 6×6 military trucks from Volvo as part of a modernization effort signed in 2023.

The Volvo fleet, which incorporates the company’s 44R and 66R systems, is one of three groups procured by Tallinn to upgrade the military’s ground-based vehicles for tactical and logistics applications.

The latest platforms measure from 5 to 6 meters (16 to 20 feet) long and have a payload capacity of 13,600 to 20,800 kilograms (29,982 to 45,856 pounds).

Estonia’s Center for Defense Investments (RKIK) noted that the trucks operate in complex terrain and various weather conditions and can also interchange loads between personnel and equipment conveniently.

Additionally, the trucks are fitted with advanced driving and safety capabilities to maintain system reliability and user protection while retaining civil logistics standards on the road.

“These trucks are a strategic investment that increases the mobility and operational readiness of the Defence Forces,” RKIK Vehicles, Technology and Logistics Category Manager Erko Sepri stated.

“The technology and technical reliability of the vehicles help ensure that our units are ready to perform their tasks in any situation.”

Additional Deliveries in 2025

The RKIK said that more trucks under the broader framework are expected this year, with the systems to be supplied by local automobile developers Scania and Veho.

The agency added that a portion of the vehicles ordered will be distributed to the Estonian Defence League, the Police and Border Guard Board, and other subagencies under the Estonian Ministry of Defense.

“Tactical trucks are important assets for combat units, both for transporting equipment and personnel, especially in our terrain, which often presents serious challenges,” Estonian Defense Forces Land Engineering Department Head Maj. Raigo Puusepp stated.

“The tactical trucks in use today have already served for nearly 50 years and need to be replaced. The trucks being purchased will renew the vehicle fleet of important units, which will certainly increase not only the level of technical reliability, but also the morale of the units.”
