Germany Delivers 15 Leopard Tanks, Air Defense Systems to Ukraine

Germany has provided Ukraine with a new military aid package to bolster Kyiv’s defenses.

The package includes 15 Leopard 1A5 tanks, one short-range and one medium-range IRIS-T air defense systems with missiles, two Patriot air defense launchers, 68 drones, and additional equipment.

Since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Berlin has delivered materials worth an estimated 5.2 billion euros ($5.7 billion) from Federal Armed Forces stocks.

Over 10,000 Ukrainian soldiers have also received military training in Germany, with related expenses totaling approximately 282 million euros ($308 million).

Leopard 1A5 Tanks

The Leopard 1A5 tanks, produced by German firm KNDS, are engineered for high accuracy with various ammunition types under different conditions, including limited visibility and while in motion.

The system supports rapid firing, precise adjustments, and quick inspections, ensuring combat readiness without requiring external testing tools.

In collaboration with Denmark, Germany has supplied Ukraine with 88 Leopard 1A5 tanks.

This latest delivery brings Kyiv’s total to 103 Leopard 1A5 systems.

IRIS-T Air Defense System

Germany, Ukraine’s second-largest military aid provider after the US, previously supplied Kyiv with the IRIS-T system in September.

The IRIS-T systems include truck-mounted launchers capable of intercepting aerial threats at ranges up to 40 kilometers (25 miles).

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized that “in Ukraine, IRIS-T has shot down over 250 rockets, drones, and cruise missiles to date and saved countless lives.”
