Saab has been contracted by BAE Systems to deliver multiple Giraffe 4A radar systems to US Air Forces in Europe.

The $48-million contract will provide long-range surveillance and air base air defense to the US forces stationed in the European theater.

Delivery will commence in 2027.

“Giraffe 4A is a multi-function radar that provides users a range of surveillance capabilities in support of comprehensive air defense,” President and CEO of Saab in the US Erik Smith said.

“This system will modernise the US Air Force’s expeditionary combat airfield surveillance operations and strengthen sensing capabilities, addressing a critical need overseas.”

Featuring a high mast, the active electronically scanned array radar is designed to overcome physical challenges such as trees and tall buildings that obstruct its line of sight.

Launched in 2021, the variant combines air defense and weapon-locating capabilities in a single unit.

It provides 3D long-range surveillance with 360-degree coverage, with a range of 300 kilometers (186 miles) and the capability to track hundreds of aerial targets simultaneously, including drones, missiles, and high-speed aircraft.

The system comes with both mobile and stationary configurations and with a remote control option. A naval version, Sea Giraffe 4A, is also available.
