Pentagon Launches New AI Office to Prepare for Future Warfare

The US Department of Defense has announced the creation of a new office dedicated to the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into military systems.

Named the Artificial Intelligence Rapid Capabilities Cell (AI RCC), the office is expected to play a key role in advancing the nation’s defense capabilities, particularly in preparation for potential conflicts in the Pacific.

A primary focus of the AI RCC will be exploring the applications of generative AI in enhancing autonomous weapons and improving command-and-control systems.

The office will operate under the oversight of the Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO) in collaboration with the Defense Innovation Unit.

“This rapid experimentation approach will allow us to test and identify where these cutting-edge technologies can make our forces more lethal and our processes more effective,” CDAO head Radha Plumb stated.

An ‘All-Hands-on-Deck’ Approach

The AI RCC will receive $100 million in funding for fiscal years 2024 and 2025 to support its research and development efforts.

Among its initiatives is incorporating AI pilots into real-world experiments.

Additionally, about $40 million of the funding will be directed to industry partners to identify and propose solutions for AI deployment in defense systems.

“It’s important to recognize that AI adoption by adversaries like China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea is accelerating and poses significant national security risks,” Plumb noted.

“We are taking an all-hands-on-deck approach to ensuring the US continues to lead the way.”
