German Leopard 2A8 Tanks to Receive Trophy Active Protection System

KNDS Deutschland has contracted EuroTrophy GmbH to deliver 123 Trophy active protection systems (APS) for the German Leopard 2A8 main battle tanks.

This is the second major contract award for EuroTrophy in a year, following the selection of the same APS by the Norwegian Army for its Leopard fleet.

In addition to supplying the protection system, EuroTrophy will provide spare parts and necessary support services to ensure the smooth integration of the Trophy into the German Army’s technical, operational, and logistical framework.

“We are honored and grateful for this award, as it clearly demonstrates the high confidence our customer KNDS has in our combat proven Active Protection System,” EuroTrophy Managing Director Dan Kalfus stated.

Neither KNDS nor EuroTrophy disclosed the contract’s total value and delivery timeline.

EuroTrophy is a joint venture between Rafael, KNDS, and General Dynamics European Land Systems.

‘First Choice’ for Customers

The Trophy APS provides 360-degree protection to nearly all types of armored vehicles, enhancing their survivability against anti-tank threats.

It features advanced technology to detect and intercept incoming projectiles using a kinetic countermeasure.

Rafael has recently upgraded the Trophy APS to include top-attack defense capabilities. This is useful for countering threats from drones and guided missiles targeting the vehicle’s vulnerable upper areas.

“We are convinced that Trophy will be the first choice for many other NATO and European users, which want to equip their [main battle tanks fighting vehicle] fleets with a Europe-made active protection system,” said Thomas Kauffmann, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of EuroTrophy.

In addition to the Leopard tanks, the Trophy APS is also integrated into the US Army’s Abrams tanks, Israel’s Merkava tanks, and the UK’s Challenger main battle tank.
