Latvia’s Ministry of Defence has received approval to purchase over 30 VR Fox light tactical vehicles for the armed forces.
The system was officially introduced in September 2022 and presented as a tailor-made platform for Riga’s warfighters.
The planned fleet, combining the design of a jeep and a buggy, will be deployed for off-road and other complex land missions once delivered.
Mārupe-based mobility company and Fox developer VR Cars will produce the vehicles locally, enabling economic support for supply chain and spare parts providers in the country.
The Latvian defense agency noted that the vehicles will also be used to develop new Fox configurations that will be adapted to future requirements of the military and its allies.
“The purchase of the domestic “VR FOX” will contribute to the security of supplies, which is critically important for the development of the capabilities of the National Armed Forces and the defense of Latvia in the current geopolitical conditions,” Latvian Defence Minister Andris Sprūds stated.
“The military all-terrain vehicle “VR FOX” is proof of the defense industry’s support for the innovations of Latvian companies.”
“The company SIA “VR Cars” has received a grant from the Ministry of Defence, the National Armed Forces have consulted the company and tested the prototype of the vehicle, as a result of which they recognized it as meeting the needs of the Latvian Army.”
The Fox Vehicle
Latvia’s incoming Fox system measures 4 meters (13 feet) long, has a width of 2 meters (7 feet), a ground clearance of 40 centimeters (16 inches), overall weight of 1,770 kilograms (3,902 pounds), and a capacity for up to five personnel.
It is equipped with either a 2.0-liter diesel or a 2.3-liter petrol engine with approximately 320 horsepower, offered in both manual or automatic transmission, and carries a 24-volt electrical system.
The Fox has a top speed of 160 kilometers (99 miles) per hour and a range of 900 kilometers (559 miles).
According to VR Cars’ product portal, the platform can navigate waters to a depth of 1 meter (3 feet) and can tilt 30 degrees sideways and 65 degrees on incline.
Users can equip the Fox with ring-mounted and swing-arm machine guns, specialized brackets for anti-tank weapons and communication devices, a cargo cage, and additional lighting sets.
