The Portuguese Army has selected Thales’ ForceShield ground-based air defense system as its new very short-range air defense solution.
Designed to safeguard military forces, civilians, and critical infrastructure, the system is capable of detecting and engaging low-altitude threats, including helicopters, drones, and missiles.
It features the Ground Master 200 air surveillance radar, which provides rapid tracking and sustained target lock-on.
The ForceShield also includes a radio communications system and a command-and-control center known as ControlView, which assesses threats and coordinates the engagement of appropriate defense units.
This decision counters earlier reports that suggested Portugal had selected Thales’ RapidRanger system for its short-range air defense needs.
Addressing Rising Regional Threats
Portugal’s procurement of Thales’ ForceShield aligns with the growing trend among European nations to bolster their ground-based air defense capabilities in response to escalating regional security threats.
The ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict has underscored the strategic importance of enhancing anti-air defenses to protect national airspace.
According to Thales, the agreement with Portugal is a significant milestone, as the country becomes the first in Europe to adopt the ForceShield system.
“Thales is proud to contribute effectively to the capability enhancement of the Portuguese Army,” said Raphael Desi, Thales’ Vice President for Integrated Airspace Protection Systems.
“This first contract is a recognition of the trust on our air defense systems by NATO countries and all over the world to support nations safeguarding their airspace sovereignty.”
