US, UK Boost Chinook Interoperability With Collins Avionics Systems
Collins Aerospace has secured a $19-million contract from the US Department of Defense to equip the UK’s fleet of Chinooks with the Common Avionics Architecture System (CAAS).
The initiative aims to enhance interoperability between UK and US equipment by aligning their avionics systems and advancing digital cockpit displays and applications.
“Interoperability with our allies will be crucial in the future fight, particularly when it comes to maintaining air dominance,” said Dave Schreck, deputy and general manager at Collins Aerospace.
“Having the same battle-proven, modernized flight deck technology on both UK and US aircraft will enable our forces to collaborate more seamlessly, lower their workload and increase operational effectiveness and safety in challenging environments.”
Common Avionics Architecture System
The CAAS Avionics Management System is designed to integrate a wide range of communications, navigation, and mission systems through its adaptable features.
This fully integrated avionics system helps pilots reduce their workload in complex tactical scenarios.
Its flexible cockpit displays are tailored for cargo, assault, and multi-mission applications.
The displays remain intuitive for indicating critical flight information, even in reduced-visibility conditions, with digital maps and tactical situational awareness displays enhancing operational efficiency.
Chinook Helicopters
In March, the UK government confirmed the acquisition of 14 state-of-the-art Chinook helicopters with heavy-lift capabilities that would “double the range of a standard Chinook,” as part of a deal valued at approximately 151 million pounds ($146 million).
In August, the US signed a $115-million contract with Boeing to produce two additional MH-74G Block II Chinook heavy-lift helicopters for its army.
