Peru has awarded Kongsberg Maritime a contract to supply its propulsion systems for the navy’s first warship under its new frigate program.
The contract includes twin controllable pitch propellers, shaft lines, bearing and seals, and associated control systems for the frigate that will help modernize the naval fleet.
“The Peruvian Navy is embarking on a major fleet renewal, and we are delighted that our controllable pitch propeller technology, a popular choice for many of the world’s navies, will feature on their first frigate,” Kongsberg Maritime Naval Vice President Björn ten Eicken said.
“Propulsion is a key part of a navy’s capability, and we are proud to supply a product that combines decades of operating experience with the latest advances in hydrodynamics to provide a propulsion system that delivers efficient operation combined with excellent maneuverability,” he added.
Multipurpose Frigates
The naval vessels will be constructed in the South American country by state-owned shipbuilder SIMA Peru and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI).
Based on HD HHI’s HDF-3200 frigate design, the latest vessels will be 417 feet (127 meters) long, have a displacement of 3,400 tons, and a maximum speed of 26.5 knots (30.5 miles/49 kilometers per hour).
The future Peruvian frigates are designed for long-range patrols with a range of 6,000 nautical miles (6,905 miles/11,112 kilometers).
The first frigate is anticipated for delivery in 2029.
