The UK has awarded a 3.1-million British pound ($4.07 million) Canine Support Solutions contract to Von Wolf K9 Sport & Service Dog Equipment Limited.

Over 500 military working dogs of various breeds from the British Army, Royal Air Force (RAF), Ministry of Defence (MOD) Police, Germany Guard Service, MOD Guard Service, and Regimental Mascots will receive equipment for detection, protection, training, and welfare.

The five-year deal, which has an option for a two-year extension, includes goggles for eye protection, hearing protection devices for blast zones, and fleece-lined rubber-soled paw protectors against extreme temperatures and shrapnel.

Also included are cooling vests for hot climates, flotation gear for marine missions, and harnesses to attach them to soldiers during parachute jumps or fast-rope descents from a helicopter.

Essential items such as waste bags, bowls, and leads are also part of the contract, in addition to balls, tunnels, weave poles, jumps, and toys for exercise and enrichment.

These ensure that the dogs are well-cared for and trained to detect explosives, arms, vehicles, and drugs, and provide handler protection and assistance.

“The welfare and security of all Military Working Dogs and handlers is of paramount importance to us, and this contract with Von Wolf will enhance our offering by catering to their needs and specific requirements in the most efficient way.” Defence Equipment and Support Operations Manager Liam Brown noted.

Von Wolf Director Sally Dickinson said, “This is more than just a business opportunity for us – it’s a responsibility we take to heart, knowing that the safety and wellbeing of these remarkable animals play a crucial role in our nation’s security.”

Additionally, the items under the contract meet the five dog welfare needs listed in the Government’s Animal Welfare Act 2006 and in the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs Code of Practice.

Previously, the UK opened a kennel center for the RAF Police’s Military Working Dogs in Marham, Norfolk, worth 23 million pounds ($30 million).
