Northrop Grumman has introduced a significant upgrade to its Bushmaster chain gun, now featuring dual-feed capability, which enhances its flexibility and lethality against both drones and ground-based targets.

Named the M230LF, the upgraded weapon allows operators to seamlessly switch between two types of ammunition, depending on operational requirements.

This saves time and reduces logistical burdens, enabling more engagements before needing to reload.

“The ability to switch between two kinds of ammunition is now possible,” the company stated. “A standard recommended ammunition load includes XM1211 proximity fused rounds for [counter-drone] and XM1198 high explosive, dual-purpose rounds for anti-armor.”

The M230LF chain gun is currently at technology readiness level 6, indicating that it has been verified and is ready for live-fire demonstrations.

‘First in the World’

Northrop claims that its next-generation M230LF is the first medium-caliber chain gun in the world to offer a dual-feed system.

This ensures that threats are addressed with the most suitable ammunition.

The upgraded model features 60 percent commonality with the previous single-feed version, simplifying maintenance and reducing the need for extensive retraining.

“Using advanced technology combined with five decades of battle-proven experience, this next-generation cannon will empower operators to quickly respond to threats,” Northrop Vice President of Armament Systems, Dave Fine, noted.

The M230LF Bushmaster chain gun will be featured at the Association of the US Army’s annual conference on October 14.
