Hanwha Defence Australia has contracted Sydney-based Thomas Global Systems to supply immersive trainers for Canberra’s upcoming Redback infantry fighting vehicles (IFV).
The trainers will provide high-fidelity simulations for the driver, gunner, and commander, helping them become familiar with vehicle functions and tactical maneuvers.
They will also assist the crew in building essential skills ahead of the Redbacks’ delivery to Australia.
“We are honored to be selected by Hanwha … to deliver this important simulation capability,” Michael Hall, company vice president for simulation and training, noted.
“The contract award recognizes the world-class capability of our Simulation & Training business, and demonstrates that Australian industry has the capacity to deliver.”
Thomas Global Systems has already begun designing the training systems and is expected to produce and deliver them by 2028.
$4.7B Deal
In July 2023, the Australian government announced the selection of Hanwha Defence to produce the country’s new IFVs for 7 billion Australian dollars ($4.7 billion).
The company’s Redback offering bested defense giant Rheinmetall, which had proposed an upgraded version of its Lynx combat vehicles.
According to Hanwha, Australia’s forthcoming IFV will feature cutting-edge sensor technology typically found in advanced fighter aircraft.
It will also be armed with an Mk44S Bushmaster II 30mm cannon and a 7.62mm coaxial machine gun.
Powered by an eight-cylinder diesel engine, the fifth-generation vehicle can reach a maximum speed of 65 kilometers (40 miles) per hour and operate at distances exceeding 520 kilometers (323 miles).
A total of 129 Redback IFVs will be delivered to the Australian Army, replacing its aging M113AS4 armored personnel carriers.
