Sweden Accepts First Army GTP Armored Personnel Carriers From Finland

Sweden has accepted its first batch of a planned 260 GTP armored personnel carriers from Finland for the Swedish Army.

The package included the troop transport variant, which accommodates up to 10 personnel, and a double cab variant with a flatbed and canopy for five passengers.

Once operational, the fleet will be designated the Terranbil 24 (TGB 24).

The remaining systems, which include additional single-cab, medical care, anti-aircraft, and “indication” variants, are expected to be shipped in the fall, the country’s Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) noted in its press release.

“The vehicle concept with different modules is reminiscent of the vehicle concept that previously existed and was called [splinter-protected unit platform],” FMV Project Manager Henrik Sundberg stated.

“Right now some verification of the vehicles is underway and in November FMV will carry out user training and technician training for the Armed Forces personnel, with a focus on command support systems on the ground.”

Supporting Cooperation With Finland

The Swedish Armed Forces Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear School revealed Stockholm’s GTP order in March.

The FMV noted that the acquisition was made in partnership with Helsinki-based Sisu Oy.

According to the agency, the vehicle’s integration into the Swedish Army is part of a broader joint framework agreement with Finland to boost the countries’ joint tactical vehicle utility, supply, and manufacturing objectives.

“With this agreement, we have created the opportunity to lower development costs and unit prices when we make joint orders,” FMV Wheeled Vehicles Head Micael Ågren Berner explained.

“This is a good example of good cooperation with fast processes and with fast deliveries within the framework of the Swedish-Finnish defense cooperation FISE.”

The Sisu GTP Vehicle

Sisu Oy’s GTP is a four-wheeled vehicle introduced in 2018 to replace the Finnish Defence Forces’ RG-32 Scout mine-resistant light armored fleet.

The GTP weighs 16.5 tons and measures 6 meters (19.6 feet) in length.

It is protected by a NATO-standard anti-mine chassis and is powered by a Mercedes-Benz 6-cylinder diesel engine.

The platform has a range of more than 700 kilometers (435 miles) and a top speed of 110 kilometers (68.3 miles) per hour.
