The Brazilian Army will modify its Agrale Marruá 4×4 utility vehicles to improve its capability to patrol border regions.

A total of 18 Agrale Marruás have reportedly been sent to defense giant Embraer for conversion into specialized communications vehicles.

It was not immediately clear what specific components would be installed on the modified units.

But once revamped, the vehicles will be integrated into the command-and-control systems of the Western Military Command.

They are also expected to boost the country’s operational presence along its western border with Paraguay and Bolivia.

Brazil patrols nearly 17,000 kilometers (10,563 miles) of land border shared with 11 countries to thwart arms smuggling and other illegal activities.

Earlier this year, the army announced it was intensifying its border operations amid soaring tensions between neighbors Venezuela and Guyana.

About the Agrale Marruás

Produced by Brazilian firm Agrale, the 4×4 military vehicle reportedly boasts unmatched durability and off-road mobility.

It is equipped with a Cummins ISF engine that enables the vehicle to reach 134 kilometers (83 miles) per hour.

The vehicle also features a heavy-duty drivetrain, solid disc brakes, a high spring suspension, and a corrosion-resistant body.

Among the missions it can support are troop transport, reconnaissance, command and control, and electronic warfare.

The Brazilian Army has acquired 109 Agrale Marruá 4×4 utility vehicles to modernize and equip its 13th Motorized Infantry Brigade and 18th Border Infantry Brigade.

Apart from Brazil, the vehicles are operational in Paraguay, Ecuador, and Argentina.
