Mitsubishi Electric has signed a pilot contract with Raytheon to repair transmitters used in APG-63 (V)1 F-15 fighter radars operated by the US Air Force and allied forces.
Raytheon will verify Mitsubishi Electric’s repair capabilities under the pilot contract, deciding whether to contract it for such services in the future.
The contract has been signed on the basis of Mitsubishi Electric’s experience producing and repairing the APG-63 (V)1s operated by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF).
Leveraging Experience
Mitsubishi Electric has been offering the services since 2004 under a manufacturing license agreement with Raytheon.
“This will be the first time for Mitsubishi Electric to repair US government military equipment,” the Tokyo-based electronics and electrical equipment manufacturer said.
“If a more permanent contract is eventually realized, Mitsubishi Electric expects to take advantage of the manufacturing and repair systems it has established under contract with the [Japan Ministry of Defense] and the JASDF.”
Japan F-15 Upgrade
The JASDF operates a fleet of F-15J and twin-seat F-15DJ aircraft licensed-manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.
A sizable number of them will be upgraded under the F-15 Japan Super Interceptor program, featuring a new radar and avionics such as the AN/APG-82(V)1 AESA radar, advanced display core processor II mission system computers, and ALQ-239 digital electronic warfare system.
