Lockheed Martin has announced the delivery of its 2,700th C-130 Hercules tactical transport aircraft to the US Marine Corps (USMC).

In a press release, the defense giant said the service received the upgraded KC-130J Super Hercules tanker aircraft to be based in North Carolina.

The plane will be operated by the USMC Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 252 and is expected to support aerial refueling, transport, and humanitarian missions.

Lockheed Air Mobility & Maritime Missions line of business VP Rod McLean said the company is honored to deliver the aircraft to the USMC, “where it will be part of the largest KC-130J fleet in the world and provide true force amplification across the globe.”

Increasing Size

According to the manufacturer, the delivery reflects the increasing size, reach, and strength of the worldwide C-130 fleet.

It also reportedly highlights the growing relevance of the tanker aircraft in the modern world, thanks to its “inherent mission and performance adaptability.”

The aircraft can refuel and extend the operational range of various warplanes, including F-35s and F-22s.

“With its truly tactical design, the KC-130J has the ability to fly at the slow speeds and low altitudes that are ideal when refueling helicopters,” Lockheed stated.

At present, there are 26 C-130J operators in 22 nations. The aircraft has logged nearly three million flight hours.
