The Italian Navy has launched its 10th FREMM frigate, Emilio Bianchi, at the Riva Trigoso integrated shipyard in northern Italy.

The ship was commissioned by Fincantieri by the navy through close collaboration with the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR), an intergovernmental group that manages arms collaborations between European countries.

Emilio Bianchi will be handed over by the third quarter of 2025 following further tests and outfitting.

The vessel, alongside other FREMM frigates, will replace the force’s Lupo- and Maestrale-class ships, built in the 1970s and the 1980s.

Italy’s first eight FREMM frigates were delivered from 2012 to 2019. Another ship, the Spartaco Schergat, is expected to be delivered by April 2025.

Multi-Purpose FREMM Frigates

Designed to take on both general-purpose and anti-submarine roles, Italy’s FREMM frigates can reach speeds of more than 31 miles (50 kilometers) per hour and achieve a range of 7,800 miles (12,600 kilometers).

The ship is 472 feet (144 meters) long, with a width of 66 feet (20 meters) and a full load displacement of 6,700 tons.

Two of the class’ air defense variants are currently in service with the French Navy.
