US Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) has signed a deal with Airbus to provide the Marine Corps with a prototype for its UH-72 Unmanned Logistics Connector (ULC).
The helicopters are being considered for the Marines’ Aerial Logistics Connector program to enhance the country’s air support capabilities.
The ULC is a variant of the Lakota helicopter, a twin-engine aircraft introduced to the US Army in 2007.
“Our unmanned UH-72 logistics connector leverages nearly two decades of U.S. military capability and offers Marines a versatile, affordable and enduring solution to address logistics missions around the globe,” Airbus US Space & Defense Chairman and CO Rob Geckle said.
The UH-72 ULC is expected to carry up to 4,000 pounds of cargo, ranging from modular boxes to missile containers.
Airbus Modernization Support
Airbus has served as one of the US Armed Forces’ closest collaborators in its push to modernize its air capabilities.
The company signed a $27.8-million contract with the US Army last year to upgrade 50 of its UH-72A Lakota helicopters.
The fleet’s digital interfaces, mission management systems, and monitors will be replaced to enhance its ability to conduct intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions.
