The US Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) has issued a request for proposals to develop a joint cyber hunt kit prototype for military networks.

According to the request, the capability is set to be a next-generation deployable solution to filter persistent digital threats across the US Department of Defense and international partner networks.

Other tasks the kit will manage include analysis of threat tactics, techniques, and procedures.

Cyber Kit ‘In a Box’

DIU wrote that the mobile platform is expected to act as a ”security operations center in a box” that can be transferred to any international location by a nine-person team.

The technology will be designed based on commercial off-the-shelf products and open-source software and must have standalone operability in austere environments without internet access.

It must also perform without leveraging additional storage and processing resources from a station’s on-premise infrastructure.

The system’s dimensions should be configured in line with international commercial airline requirements and must have corresponding modularity for additional payloads.

Production Plan

According to the DIU, the selected company will perform work on the prototype over four months.

After the production contract for the solution has been awarded, the Pentagon may order up to 250 hunt kits annually or purchase the capability’s licenses to become government-furnished equipment.

The DIU said that the kits will then be distributed to the Service Cyber Components, US Cyber Command, Army Cyber Command, Marine Corps Forces Cyberspace Command, Coast Guard Cyber Command, Air Forces Cyber/16th Air Force, and Fleet Cyber Command/Tenth Fleet through future indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity orders.
