The US Army has opened a renovated military facility in Germany to support depot-level maintenance for warfighter equipment in Europe.
Located at the Tobyhanna Army Depot Forward Repair Area-Europe in Kaiserslautern, the site saw three years of reconstruction and is now operational under the agency’s Communications-Electronics Command (CECOM).
The budget for the project was $2 million, drawn from the European Defensive Initiative Fund, which focuses on boosting military equipment and technologies across EU and NATO member states.
The US Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz, also located in Kaiserslautern, shouldered an additional $150,000 to complete repairs and replacements of the center’s roof and exterior.
‘Up-to-Date Facility’
The army wrote that the revamped depot could extend the service life of specific tactical equipment for five years.
Alongside testing and refurbishments, the hub offers services for electronic and communication systems, enabling the site to decrease timelines and increase sustainment readiness.
“It provides the team an up-to-date facility with increased capacity and capability to improve our work efficiency and our morale,” Tobyhanna Army Depot Europe Chief Kevin Beck stated.
“We have a new facility, and our people are – more than ever – excited to come to work every day.”
Supporting CECOM
According to the service, the construction will further support CECOM’s critical role in assisting the US Army’s command, control, communications, computer, cyber, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C5ISR) capabilities in Europe and Africa.
CECOM currently operates as one of the life cycle management units under the US Army Materiel Command, which sustains, procures, distributes, and oversees the supply of the force.
Since its opening in 2018, the Tobyhanna Army Depot Forward Repair Area has facilitated more than 115 projects worth $33 million, extending the combined life cycles of these assets to approximately 600 years.
“CECOM sustains and delivers C5ISR to enable full spectrum combat operations at the point of need,” a statement from the US Army said.
“Whether repairing radar and satellite terminals to maintain battlefield awareness, delivering software updates to keep tactical radios safe from virtual intruders, or ensuring spare parts are available whenever and wherever needed, CECOM’s global team equips and empowers Soldiers in all aspects of C5ISR.”
