Lockheed to Build Micro-Electronics Suite for US Navy’s MH-60R Helicopter

Lockheed Martin has been tapped to develop an advanced micro-electronics package to be integrated into the US Navy’s MH-60R Seahawk helicopters.

Part of the Stimulating Transition for Advanced Microelectronics Packaging (STAMP) program, the suite will enable faster and more accurate detection and identification of threats.

It will feature small size, weight, power, and cost, freeing up space for other equipment in support of other missions.

“In the modern battlespace, against modern threats, this technology will be essential to the evolution of legacy systems and development of new systems that keep service members safe by controlling the electromagnetic spectrum and staying ahead of the threat,” company vice president of spectrum convergence Deon Viergutz said.

Although the micro-electronics suite was initially designed for Sikorsky choppers, the US Navy wants it to be integrated into other platforms across air, land, and sea domains.

Lockheed’s micro-electronics suite will utilize Altera’s Multi-Chip Package to provide advanced digital and analog capabilities.

The package will also enable higher bandwidth and performance at low latency, power, and a smaller footprint.

“We are excited to work with Intel, Altera, and OUSD (Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering) to provide a revolutionary leap in defense systems capabilities, utilizing high-performance US-built semiconductors,” Viergutz stated.

Work for the program will take place over the next 18 months at Lockheed’s facility in Owego, New York.
