The first Bell AH-1Z Viper helicopter to receive the Structural Improvement Electrical Power Upgrade (SIEPU) has arrived at Bell’s Amarillo Assembly Center in Texas.

Greater electrical power and structural improvements will enable the US Marine Corps helicopter to integrate current weapons with next-generation capabilities, both kinetic and non-kinetic, featuring greater range and stand-off distance.

It will also allow for the integration of future weapons yet to be implemented and improve the aircraft’s aircrew safety and interoperability.

Future Weapons

The Marines Force Design 2030 modernization effort includes the integration of long-range loitering munition with current platforms, including the AH-1Z, replacing the Hellfire missile.

“We are confident that SIEPU will help the Marine Corps expand mission essential tasks with more mission flexibility,” SIEPU program manager Danielle Markham said.

“The important thing is to make sure the H-1 is in a position to take advantage of those opportunities as they become available.”
