UK Taps McLaren for High Tech, Electric Defense Capabilities
The UK Ministry of Defence has partnered with automotive manufacturer McLaren to develop high-tech, innovative projects for the British Army.
The ministry will collaborate with McLaren’s Accelerator team to apply motorsport innovation to current and future military capabilities.
McLaren lists electrification of military vehicles, product development optimization, and operational efficiency as some of the likely ventures to work on.
The ministry shared the possibility of having the automotive giant work on Project Lurcher, an initiative to reduce the force’s carbon footprint by transitioning into electric capabilities.
“This new partnership with the Ministry of Defence provides a great opportunity to stretch and apply our innovation and technological know-how and a high-performance culture with a view to improving operational efficiencies across a wide range of exciting projects,” McLaren Racing Co-Chief Commercial Officer Matt Dennington said.
Greener Capabilities
Aside from pushing for more environment-friendly land capabilities, the UK has also been focusing on fuel-efficient solutions for its naval fleet.
In January, it was announced that the Royal Navy’s Fleet Solid Support ships will receive GE Vernova hybrid-electric induction motor generators.
GE Vernova also fitted the Royal Fleet Auxiliary’s Tide-class tankers with energy-efficient propulsion systems in 2022.
