Lockheed Martin has demonstrated the improved capability of its Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) missile, doubling its range in a recent trial.
The company said two Extended-Range (ER) GMLRS munitions were fired from the US Army’s HIMARS launcher into a target at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.
They reportedly achieved the desired flight trajectory, speed, range, and accuracy, though no exact figures were provided.
The listed operational range of the GMLRS is 70 kilometers (43 miles), while the extended-range variant can hit targets up to 150 kilometers (93 miles) away.
Lockheed Martin said the successful test brings the powerful munition a step closer to full-rate production and fielding.
Demonstrating Readiness
The ER GMLRS is an all-weather, surface-to-surface weapon providing precision strike capability to military units.
It can be fired from both the MLRS M270 family of launchers and the HIMARS.
Unlike other GMLRS variants, the extended-range version incorporates a large motor and boasts enhanced maneuverability thanks to its tail-driven control.
Lockheed Vice President Jay Price said the recent demonstration reflects the readiness of the ER GMLRS for deployment.
“Our capabilities provide range options, affordability, and of course the continued precision of this enhanced system,” he concluded.
