Saab has signed an agreement to provide Poland’s Armed Forces with Carl Gustaf M4 anti-tank weapons, ammunition, and training equipment.
The order, valued at 12.9 billion kronor ($1.2 billion), will see the Swedish arms manufacturer deliver an undisclosed number of rifles from 2024 to 2027.
“I am proud of our close relationship with the Polish Armed Forces and that Saab can continue to strengthen Poland’s ground combat capability and national defence with our world-leading Carl-Gustaf system,” Saab CEO and President Micael Johansson said.
The contract follows recent partnerships between the two in the defense sector, including an order for Poland’s first Airborne Early Warning aircraft announced last year.
Carl Gustaf Specifications
The Carl Gustaf is an 8.4 mm recoilless rifle designed as a portable infantry support gun for close-range combat. It is mainly operated in anti-armor and personnel missions and has a support capability for battlefield illumination, smoke screening, and marking fire.
It is usually crewed by a gunner and a loader but may also be used by a single operator, albeit at a reduced rate of fire lower than six rounds per minute.
Each unit costs around $20,000, with its ammunition adding $500 to $3,000 per round.
Its operators include Australia, the US, and Japan, which recently ordered 300 to be delivered by 2025.
