The Austrian Armed Forces has received its first batch of military utility vehicles (MUVs) from Iveco Defence Vehicles.

The transfer follows a 42.5-million-euro ($46 million) deal for 125 MUVs, 70 command support systems, and 55 radio links.

Part of Austria’s recent force modernization efforts, the MUVs will replace the country’s 900 Pinzgauers, some of which have been in the army since the 1970s.

Austrian car manufacturer EMPL collaborated with Iveco to equip the vehicles with specialized military equipment.

Delivery of the capabilities is scheduled for completion by 2026.

Modular Capability

Iveco’s MUV is based on the company’s Daily commercial van, adapted with modular configurations for multi-purpose use ranging from medical and logistics to troop transport roles. Its design allows it to use commercial off-the-shelf components and use newer technologies.

It is capable of operating in extreme weather conditions up to -32 degrees Celsius (-26 Fahrenheit).

The two-axle, permanent all-wheel drive vehicle has a permissible total weight of seven tons, and can carry up to four tons of payload.

Its protection features include a metallic engine bonnet, a power take-off system, and a heavy-duty front bumper.
