Canada has selected General Dynamics Land Systems to supply the armed forces with new light and heavy vehicles under Ottawa’s Logistics Vehicle Modernization Project.

Announced in 2019, the program aims to equip warfighters with ground mobility systems, corresponding equipment, and in-service support to enhance the country’s domestic and global military operations.

The platforms will eventually replace Canada’s existing logistics vehicles to further support resource transfers, personnel transport, equipment movements, and training exercises.

Planned vehicles include transport modules that can be modified for command posts, cargo space, ambulances, troop lifts, and workshops.

The fleet will be utilized alongside combat applications for emergency scenarios and peacekeeping efforts.

“Through the Logistics Vehicle Modernization project, we are investing to provide the Canadian Armed Forces with modern logistics vehicles that will be used to transport personnel, equipment and supplies in support of operations at home and abroad,” Canadian Defence Minister Bill Blair stated.

“Today’s milestone is an important step forward in this project. This decision brings the Canadian Army closer to receiving the vehicles that it needs to continue to protect Canadians.”

Sustaining Local Jobs

The Canadian government wrote that General Dynamics will receive the contract to deliver the vehicles in the spring of 2024.

The company is required to submit an Indigenous Participation Plan to ensure the country’s domestic capability is utilized throughout the Logistics Vehicle Modernization project.

In line with this, five percent of the contract value will support the employment of Canadian citizens and the procurement of related services and components from local businesses and entrepreneurs.

In addition, competency programs will be facilitated in partnership with domestic partners to support the program.

“The Canadian Armed Forces members deserve the modern equipment required to effectively perform their duties at home and abroad,” Canadian Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne said

“This project will provide military members with the needed vehicle fleet while also creating and maintaining highly skilled jobs and contributing to economic growth in Canada.”
