Rafael Advanced Defense Systems has announced the successful trial of a new, improved configuration of its Spyder air defense system.
Dubbed the “All-in-One,” the configuration combines all short-range and medium-range components of the surface-to-air system.
It includes an integrated 360-degree radar, electro-optical launcher, advanced command-and-control system, and PYTHON and Derby interceptors, all mounted on a single platform.
On Wednesday, the Israeli firm said the modified Spyder effectively neutralized a drone under a “challenging operational scenario.”
“The success of the test is a significant milestone in developing the system against different threats and demonstrates the system’s effectiveness in intercepting challenging ground-launched threats,” Rafael official Retired Brig. Gen. Pini Yungman said.
Advantages
According to the company, mounting all short- and medium-range components on one platform provides potential customers with an optimal air defense solution.
It can be used for point defense, which focuses on a specific location, or area defense, which covers a broader territory.
It can also be deployed independently with minimal crew involvement.
The “All-in-One” configuration can safeguard critical military assets, such as mobile troops and sensitive installations.
In addition to drones, it can neutralize fixed and rotary-wing aircraft, cruise missiles, and precision-guided munitions at a maximum range of 40 kilometers (25 miles).
“The new Spyder All-in-One configuration is a quick reaction air defense system [that fully addresses] individualized mission needs and the complex realities of modern warfare,” the company stated.
In-Demand System
Rafael’s Spyder air defense system can detect threats while on the move and fire instantly to catch targets off guard.
It can simultaneously and autonomously handle multiple threats, including saturation attacks.
