The US Navy has successfully launched and recovered an unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV).
The USS Delaware crew conducted the HII Remus UUV launch under Operation Yellow Moray, an initiative that tests the navy’s drones for underwater patrols and intelligence missions.
Members of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, as well as USS Indiana and USS Oregon crew, assisted with the mission.
Its launch and recovery is the second successful test focusing on UUVs. The Navy’s Submarine Force Pacific recovered an unmanned vessel from a submarine torpedo tube last week, according to Naval News.
The US Navy’s recent push for more advanced unmanned underwater capabilities focuses on mine countermeasures, anti-submarine warfare, electronic warfare, and strike missions.
Growing Unmanned Developments
“The Yellow Moray system will provide the US submarine force with additional mission capability, enhancing what the US Navy’s submarines can provide to our nation’s unified combatant commands around the globe,” the navy’s Submarine Readiness 32nd Squadron stated.
Additional programs focusing on UUV development include hull design development from DARPA, as well as next-generation production and testing for other small UUVs.
