GM Defense and UK’s Jankel have signed a memorandum of understanding to offer the Heavy-Duty Sport Utility Vehicle (HD SUV) for defense and government customers.
The HD SUV is a purpose-built 4-wheel drive system based on existing sport utility vehicles and full-size pickup trucks. It is equipped with a 6.2-liter V8 engine as well as specialized power steering and front coil-cover shock features.
The collaboration supports the companies’ efforts to jointly expand business opportunities in allied nations in addition to their respective countries.
Integrated Armored Vehicle
Under the agreement, GM Defense will leverage a commercially-based approach from its parent company General Motors to manufacture and deliver the HD SUV’s international variant, the Integrated Armored Vehicle (IAV).
Work for the vehicle’s design will incorporate “independent armoring certification” with additional configurations depending on customer requirements.
This approach is expected to sustain the safety, reliability, and maneuverability of the platform.
Meanwhile, Jankel will utilize its experience in supporting Civilian Armored Vehicles for defense and security customers.
The British company will provide a full-service support suite that includes a “complete spectrum” of in-service maintenance for the HD SUV and other vehicles planned in the strategic cooperation with GM Defense.
To date, Jankel has supplied more than 2,000 specialist-protected platforms to over 15 international customers, including the US and the UK.
“Announcing this [memorandum of understanding] is a key step for Jankel as we continue to grow our global footprint in the defense and security vehicle space,” Jankel Chairmen Andrew Jankel stated.
“In selecting Jankel, GM Defense has recognized our strong position in the UK and Europe, and we look forward to pursuing joint support opportunities for GM Defense’s IAV.”
“Whilst our initial focus will be on support for the IAV, the collaboration allows for a broadening of the scope to include other GM Defense products and services provided we find suitable joint opportunities. We very much look forward to growing this important relationship.”
