Four US Air Force F-16 fighter jets have arrived at Fetesti Air Base in Romania to conduct NATO air policing missions in the area.

The aircraft came as NATO continues to tighten its members’ borders due to growing concerns over the nearby Russo-Ukrainian war.

NATO’s reinforcements on the alliance’s eastern flank include multinational battlegroups, air and maritime presence, and regular surveillance flights.

Vigilant Neighbors

Acting NATO spokesperson Dylan White explained the importance of staying vigilant and in close contact with all of the allies.

“This sends a clear message that we will protect every Ally,” he said. “As Russia continues its brutal war of aggression against Ukraine, we have seen a number of strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure very close to NATO territory. We remain vigilant and in close contact with Allies in the region.”

Recently, two Romanian Air Force helicopters were deployed with specialist teams to three of Romania’s eastern counties, where suspected Russian drone fragments were found.

NATO’s Ongoing Support

Other than among its members, NATO also cooperates closely with its partner, Ukraine.

The alliance pledged open-ended military support for the war-torn country in May after Finland joined the alliance, adding a potent military force to NATO and providing its eastern border with stronger defenses.
