The US Marine Corps has taken delivery of its first trailer- and vehicle-mounted 5G systems from Lockheed Martin.
Called the Open Systems Interoperable and Reconfigurable Infrastructure Solution (OSIRIS), the equipment promises faster communication on the battlefield.
It is designed to be used in contested expeditionary environments, making tactics more efficient by providing a quicker communication network.
“The Lockheed Martin-led team, in close partnership with the US Marine Corps, has proven that quickly evolving 5G commercial technology can be leveraged in near real-time to solve current and emergent mission challenges,” company vice president Deon Viergutz said.
Apart from the 5G systems, the delivery included a trailer-mounted tower and an all-terrain vehicle mobile relay system.
The US Marine Corps will soon begin mobile network experimentation at Camp Pendleton in California.
‘Increased Bandwidth, Faster Speeds’
Lockheed’s new system would allow warfighters to connect to 5G-ready devices, sensors, and vehicles.
The network can also be integrated into intelligence and command platforms to reduce latency and increase communication speeds from “hours to minutes.”
The OSIRIS is also compliant with the Open-Radio Access Network 7.2 split architecture, which optimizes its bandwidth.
“This capability will further enable and advance [the US Department of Defense’s] Joint All Domain Operations concept,” Lockheed stated.
