SEA to Upgrade Communication Systems on New Zealand Anzac Frigates
New Zealand has awarded SEA a 26-million pound ($33 million) contract to support the phase two communication system upgrade of two Royal New Zealand Navy Anzac-class frigates.
The Frigate Sustainment – Communications project focuses on developing and integrating modernized communication capabilities for the Anzac vessels.
The contract for the first phase was awarded to SEA in 2021 and valued at 4.6 million pounds ($5.8 million).
Effective and Secure Communications
SEA’s system is expected to reduce costs and maintenance of the ships’ communications capabilities throughout their service life.
The revamped system’s open architecture will allow the navy to employ other equipment at sea, such as radios and cryptos produced by other defense industry partners.
In addition, the platform’s compatibility features will enable the navy to link with allied forces and support missions with neighboring countries such as Australia.
“A ship’s communications are integral to any successful mission, and our flexible surface ship system will allow the Royal New Zealand Navy to communicate effectively and securely with partners while also reducing maintenance and associated costs,” SEA Managing Director Richard Flitton stated.
“Having completed the design of the system, we’re now fully focused on bringing it into service over the coming years.”
Supporting New Zealand’s Local Industry
Since joining New Zealand’s frigate sustainment project, SEA has been part of other government defense initiatives.
These involved enhancing the HMS Raleigh Training Facility’s eECS Training System and other tours to demonstrate SEA products for New Zealand’s naval force.
For the Anzac communications project, SEA will collaborate with local companies, including MAROPS, Beca, and McKay, to advance the development’s first phase.
“In addition to supporting the Royal New Zealand Navy’s continued technological innovation, we’re also pleased to be developing in-country training, skills and expertise through our various local partners,” Flitton said.
“We’re delighted to be increasing our presence in Australasia having proven our ability to deliver in the region.”
