Rafael recently unveiled its Sky Spear ‘sixth-generation’ air-to-air missile at the Paris Air Show 2023.

The long-range missile features a new radio frequency seeker that enables early lock-on and protection from airborne and ground-based jamming.

The missile can be outfitted on previous, current, and future-generation aircraft, and its maneuverability allows it to engage both long and short-range targets.

At Pre-Full-Scale Development Phase

The missile is at the “pre-full-scale development phase,” Janes wrote, quoting Rafael’s air defense systems and air-to-air directorate’s business development director Yaniv Rotem.

Rotem added that the missile is currently at a low technology readiness level, and the company is searching for a governmental partnership to progress its development.

The head of Rafael’s air and missile defense directorate Brig. Gen. (Res.) Pini Yungman said,“The first air-to-air missile by Rafael was developed in 1959 and five generations later we have maintained our technological edge in providing unique and timely solutions for our partners.”

“From the Python and Derby which provide not only armaments for fighter crafts but also as the main components of our Spyder air defense system and now to the sixth generation long-range Sky Spear, Rafael is confident that this newest missile will provide the advanced capabilities that will provide users a qualitative edge over its most capable adversaries.”
