The European Defence Agency (EDA) has announced the successful completion of a surface-to-air laser weapon program.
Called the Tactical Advanced Laser Optical System (TALOS), the weapon has a compact design and can quickly and precisely neutralize agile targets.
It can reportedly take down enemy rockets and drones while significantly minimizing collateral damage.
According to the EDA, the manufacturers of the TALOS addressed various concerns in developing the system. These included operations, target vulnerability, and laser combining technology
“The results of the project will contribute significantly to enhancing EU member states’ defense capabilities in critical laser effector technologies,” the agency stated.
The new system will benefit nine European countries, including France, the Netherlands, Germany, and Italy.
Growing Market
Investments in directed energy weapon systems have notably increased in recent years due to evolving security threats.
The US Air Force recently tested its first palletized high-energy laser weapon, the “H4.”
The 10-kilowatt weapon can secure military assets and personnel against short-range aerial threats.
In 2019, France also unveiled plans to develop anti-satellite laser weapons to close the gap on rivals developing new arms and surveillance capabilities in space.
“If our satellites are threatened, we intend to blind those of our adversaries,” then-Minister of the Armed Forces Florence Parly said.
