Northrop Grumman to Upgrade Next-Generation G/ATOR Radar System

Northrop Grumman will continue upgrading its next-generation multi-mission radar following the system’s initial Full Rate Production for the US Marine Corps.

The AN/TPS-80 Ground/Air Task-Oriented Radar (G/ATOR) will receive extended range and other capabilities to further support the military’s air and missile defense requirements.

The upgrade will focus on systems currently in production. Northrop will facilitate work for the project next year.

“The advanced functionality significantly increases the range of the current system, enhances cruise missile defense capability and establishes G/ATOR as the most agile ground-based surveillance and integrated fire control system available today,” Northrop Grumman Advanced Land Sensors Director Melissa Johanson stated.

“We are committed to outpacing modern adversary threat systems for partner and allied forces with advanced surveillance and fire control capability.”

G/ATOR integrates five US Marine Corps single-mission radars into one multi-mission platform with improved power and communication elements for air defense surveillance.

This approach provides warfighters with enhanced situational awareness, better protection, and rapid decision-making support during combat.

The radar uses a three-dimensional active electronically scanned array with 360-degree coverage to identify and target airborne threats, including aircraft, cruise missiles, aerial drones, artillery, mortars, and rockets.

Before the upgrade announcement, the US Congress funded the procurement of eight additional G/ATOR systems for the US Marine Corps.

Of the 46 G/ATOR systems purchased from Northrop Grumman, 21 have so far been fielded.
