NATO has awarded aviation solutions provider Draken a contract to extend electronic warfare training support for the Spanish Navy.

The three-year agreement will aid the navy in preparing for multi-domain missions by conducting tests through the company’s “highly-modified” Dassault Falcon 20 aircraft.

The military-configured aircraft can deploy for aerial simulation of advanced and evolving threats to match the user’s training requirements.

“The formalization of this Outline Agreement is the successful culmination of a long and complex negotiation involving technical, contractual and legal aspects; which has enabled a more responsive, efficient approach to meeting customer requirements to support naval exercises,” NATO Support and Procurement Agency Project Officer Angel Pastor said.

“In the future, the Naval Support Section expects to expand the base of customers among NLSP members and exploit synergies on the subject with SHAPE and other NATO agencies.”

Originally manufactured by Dassault Aviation, the Falcon 20 medium-range jet has a length of 17.15 meters (57 feet) and a wing span of 19.3 meters (63 feet).

It is powered by dual General Electric CF700-2D-2 reactors and has 4,180 kilograms of fuel capacity.

The aircraft has a maximum flight speed of 420 knots (777 kilometers/483 miles per hour) and a range of 2,300 nautical miles (4,300 kilometers/2,600 miles).

“As with all our services, the Draken team approaches the delivery of Electronic Warfare effects in multi-domain operations with nothing but the utmost integrity,” Draken CEO Paul Armstrong said.

Our teams recognise that the training effects we deliver are vital to front-line forces, ensuring their operational readiness, and we are proud that the [NATO Support and Procurement Agency] has entrusted Draken to deliver these essential training services to the Spanish Navy.”
