Engineering firm ABB has received a contract from shipbuilder Meyer Turku to deliver integrated power and propulsion solutions for the Finnish Border Guard’s two advanced multi-purpose patrol vessels.

Under the agreement, ABB will supply its Azipod propulsion units, Onboard DC Grid power systems, and Power and Energy Management Systems to support the ships’ ice-breaking and high-maneuverability capabilities.

The components will also enhance the vessels‘ power efficiency and compatibility with alternative energy sources.

‘Preferred System Integrator’

According to ABB, the package order will ensure the patrol vessels’ continuous operability and readiness.

ABB’s propulsion and power systems will also aid the ships in maintaining their low-emission and energy-saving features while on territorial, civilian, and nature protection missions.

“We are proud to have been chosen by the Finnish Border Guard for this important and forward-thinking project and look forward to continuing our long-standing collaboration with Meyer Turku,” ABB Marine Propulsion Head Antti Ruohonen stated.

“With this order, ABB further demonstrates its position as preferred system integrator for challenging and diverse vessel operations.”

Meeting Patrol Craft Requirements

The 98-meter (322 feet) vessels will be delivered from 2025 to 2026 to replace Finland’s aging Tursas and Uisko-class patrol fleets.

Once commissioned, the new patrol craft will be deployed alongside the country’s Turva-class boats for border security, environmental support, and maritime rescue.

The ships will also serve as command bases as required during joint operations.

“Our new patrol vessels will be at sea about 330 days a year, performing operations under busy and diverse conditions,” Finnish Border Guard Technical Unit Head Cmdr. Marko Aheristo explained.

“The vessels are designed for low-emission operations and for energy efficiency, and need a versatile and sophisticated power and propulsion system based on advanced, proven technology. ABB provides us with an integrated package that meets our stringent requirements.”
