Raytheon Technologies has received a $619-million contract to continue supplying the US Navy with AN/SPY-6(V) air and missile defense radars.

The deal is on top of the $651-million contract signed last year for the production of SPY-6 radars to be installed on the service’s new surface ships.

According to company official Kim Ernzen, the integration of the cutting-edge radars into US surface combatants has already begun, and the navy’s first Flight III destroyer is now operating the system.

Work for the contract is expected to be completed by September 2026.

‘Most Advanced Naval Radar’

Raytheon’s SPY-6 family of radars is designed to provide simultaneous protection against ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, aircraft, and surface ships.

It reportedly has significantly greater detection range, increased sensitivity, and more accurate discrimination of targets than other legacy radars in service with the military.

Additionally, the system’s “scalable” and “modular” radar arrays allow reduced operational costs and sustainment needs.

According to the company, the SPY-6 would optimize the effectiveness of the US Navy’s most advanced weapons, including SM-6 missiles, by providing precise targeting information.

“SPY-6 is the most advanced naval radar in the world providing unprecedented integrated air and missile defense capabilities,” Ernzen said.
