Thales has received a contract to supply more than 2,500 SquadNet tactical radios for the Austrian Armed Forces, the second order from a European customer after Belgium.
The SquadNet combines networking waveform with existing communication systems, including programmable encryption, GPU, and Bluetooth.
Thales’ SquadNet
SquadNet is an affordable, portable, and efficient package providing warfighters with reliable connectivity, according to Thales.
Each unit comes in a small, lightweight design. It has data-sharing options, location reporting, and autonomy for up to 24 hours.
The radio is programmed with the company’s SABRE, battlefield software providing critical information and real-time situational awareness through navigation and target information.
“With Thales SquadNet, the Austrian Armed Forces will be one of the first European countries to have a highly modern software-defined radio system with full digital signal processing in use, thereby reaching technological leadership in the field of tactical communication,” Thales Austria Director and CEO Hannes Boyer said.
“As a trusted partner, Thales is very pleased to support the Austrian Ministry of Defense in the modernisation and digitalisation of their armed forces.”
